Prime real estate on Ashmun Street owned by the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will soon be available to lease, rent or partner according to the Tribe’s economic development corporation. The location, 531 Ashmun Street, was formally the American Café. The tribal EDC is now seeking proposals to occupy the space. The area would be shared with the River of History Museum, Ojibwe Learning Center and Library and numerous Sault Tribe employees’ departments. “We’re trying to optimize the space,” said Sault Tribe Economic Development Director Joel Schultz. “We want to see what comes in there be successful.” Due to its past life as a café, the 5,203 sq. ft. does include some restaurant equipment that could be beneficial. There’s an oven hood, counter space, a walk-in freezer, walk-in cooler and grill according to Shultz. Although it has restaurant equipment, potential tenants aren’t required to operate it as such. Shultz emphasized that above all he’ll be considering proposals that are well thought out. “Over a period of time, once I get a fair enough amount of concepts, I’ll present some of those to the board of directors,” said the EDC director. Since Shultz has been involved with the tribal EDC, he said the building has had light occupation, but never anything long-term. “Maybe over time a (tribal) department has moved in to use it,” he added. “It was never occupied for long.” Shultz also noted that the EDC would be willing to work with potential tenants to help generate revenue to offset expenses.

As residents prepare for winter, the Public Works and Engineering department would like to provide the following reminders: Staff are currently sweeping and cleaning basins and storm drains in preparation for the flow of water during the winter months. The public is asked to manage leaves as they may cause drains to plug, resulting in potential flooding. Take caution when in close proximity to drainage systems and ensure children and pets stay away from hazardous areas. Basketball nets should also be removed from roadways to assist in street cleaning. Additionally, under By-law 77-200-5(14), motorists are reminded that effective Wednesday, November 1 parking of vehicles on city streets is not permitted during the winter months between midnight and 6 a.m. Vehicles that remain parked on the street during an overnight parking restriction will receive a $15 fine and may have their vehicle towed at the owner's expense. The By-law remains in effect from November 1, 2017 through to midnight April 30, 2018 even when there is no snow.
